Leatherhead Road

St.Mary's church. On the main road halfway between the village and East Horsley.  The church is near an ancient droveway to the Weald. Parts of the walls may be Saxon and the tower is early Norman with a c14th shingled spire. A timber porch is from the c15th and covers a doorway of about 1370.  In 1849 a doorway made of chalk was moved outwards and a new porch added.  The circular font dates from the late c12th, there is chest of about 1220 and a screen of Surrey woodwork.  There is a c13th painting of the Fall of Man, almost undecipherable.  There is an original window showing St Catherine and Christ being annointed by Mary Magdalene.  A kneeling figure of a knight in a window above represents Sir James Berners, d.1383, and a supporter of Richard II and patron of the church.  On another wall is a 14th-century bas-relief of the Nativity, in alabaster, found under the floor in 1810.  The Nicholas chapel dates from about 1470. Monuments: Nicholas family of West Horsley Place, c17th; a 14th-century wall-tomb with the effigy of a priest is generally supposed to be the tomb of Ralph Berners, d. 1348, rector here; the monkeys' heads carved on the canopy are the badge of his family.   There is a legend that the head of Sir Walter Raleigh, executed in 1618, is preserved in the vault below the chapel buried with his son, Carew Raleigh, who lived at West Horsley Place, though the body of Raleigh himself was buried either at Beddington or in St Margaret's, Westminster.  His widow, who lived in this area, obtained his head, boiled it, and carried it round with her for the rest of her life in a small leather bag.

Bromley by Bow

Pub dating from the 1860s. It does not appear to be still there. Police stables . From 1938 twenty horses were located here. These stables were built in moderne style white concrete by police surveyor Gilbert Mackenzie Trench. There is a stable at the back as well as tack rooms and a chimney for the forge – there was a full time farrier. Above are two flats for married police officers. The white concrete wall is original.  Alfred Street 1-5 Inland Revenue Office . Sold off 1981. Has been used as a college an as offices Almshouses Way, This was once called Priscilla Street.  1 Drapers' Almshouses . M25 New Haw

Post to the south Byfleet Wey Navigation Abbott Close Trading and light industrial area Basingstoke Canal Woodham Junction . This is where the Basingstoke Canal leaves the River Wey Navigation. Footbridge – this footbridge dates from 1996, the original having become derelict and collapsed. Byfleet Road Byfleet and New Haw Station . This opened in  1927 and lies between West Byfleet and Addlestone and also Weybridge on South Western Trains. It is on the original South Western Mainline of the London and Southampton Railway opening in 1838. The station was designed by architect James Ribb Scott and catered to a rapidly increasing population. It was then called West Weybridge and changed to the current name in 1962.
