Little Berkhampstead

Church Road

St.Andrew.  There was a church here  built in 1647 but nothing remains except that parts of the east and west walls are thought to have been part of it - the present building is Victorian. Bishop Thomas Ken, the writer of hymns and the well known doxology "Praise God from whom all blessings flow", was born in the parish in 1637 and the chancel altar was given in his memory. One of the bells in the wooden bellcote is 1350 and there is floor slab to show that Cromwell's grandson, Cromwell Fleetwood, is buried here.  20th east window by Rozencrantz.

Little Berkhampstead

Was it here, rather than at Berkhampstead, that William the Conquerer accepted a surrender from Edgar. It was then a royal estate.

Brian Johnson born, radio commentator on cricket.
