Beech Lane

Part of an old route which goes from Effingham down the North Downs scarp to Crossways Farm on the A25. it then goes through Abinger, Sutton and Holmbury St.Mary and by the Holmbury hill fort.  This is one of the old roads connecting North Downs settlements with swine pastures in the Weald.

Church Street

St.Laurence’s Church.  The church was provided by the new lord of the manor after the Conquest for his own and tenants’ use.  Most notable on a dip slope parish like this and built small and contiguous with the manor.  It is near an ancient droveway to the Weald. Part perhaps built by Merton Priory who later owned it.  Big barn like transept. The church was restored out of all recognition in 1888, when also the tower was rebuilt in flint.  All that survives of the medieval building are remains of 13-14th-century windows in the chancel and south transept. Flint and brick in the Gothic style and has a tower of brick, rebuilt in 1757, with a clock and several bells.

In 1572 John Lyon, a local farmer established the school, on his death management passed to a Board of Governors. Their first duty was to replace the schoolhouse. It opened in 1615. Designed by a Mr. Sly in brick it faced Church Hill, with conservative Tudor details typical of its date.  The single-schoolroom lay below rooms for head master, usher, and governors’ room with panelling of 1661. It is described as the best preserved 17th century schoolroom in the country. Pub dating from the 1860s. It does not appear to be still there. Police stables . From 1938 twenty horses were located here. These stables were built in moderne style white concrete by police surveyor Gilbert Mackenzie Trench. There is a stable at the back as well as tack rooms and a chimney for the forge – there was a full time farrier. Above are two flats for married police officers. The white concrete wall is original.  Alfred Street 1-5 Inland Revenue Office . Sold off 1981. Has been used as a college an as offices Almshouses Way, This was once called Priscilla Street.  1 Drapers' Almshouses . M25 New Haw

Post to the south Byfleet Wey Navigation Abbott Close Trading and light industrial area Basingstoke Canal Woodham Junction . This is where the Basingstoke Canal leaves the River Wey Navigation. Footbridge – this footbridge dates from 1996, the original having become derelict and collapsed. Byfleet Road Byfleet and New Haw Station . This opened in  1927 and lies between West Byfleet and Addlestone and also Weybridge on South Western Trains. It is on the original South Western Mainline of the London and Southampton Railway opening in 1838. The station was designed by architect James Ribb Scott and catered to a rapidly increasing population. It was then called West Weybridge and changed to the current name in 1962.
