Hatfield

 

         Great North Road

Now begins the feature once known to cyclists as the Long Wall, the stone wall which borders the Salisbury properties of Millwards and Hatfield. With the occasional lodge gates and woodlands of the park on the right, and the railway sunk in a slight cutting on the left, there was no more delightful  stretch of the Great North Road before the traffic grew and the old road could tolerate it no longer. Barnet by-pass a mile to the west later filtered off much of the traffic but the old highway was not left in peace for diversions caused by new roads serving Hatfield New Town have disturbed its course
