Dorking Limeworks

This works was reputed to produce some of the best lime in England for building purposes. It was used in the late 18th century in the construction of Somerset House and the Bank of England, whilst in the next century its property of hardening under water was the reason for its use in constructing the West India and London Docks.  The works closed in 1939 but parts of the site are now used as a refuse depot.
