Cannon Hill Common
Noted as ‘Canondownhyll’ in 1536 and then by 1819 as ‘Cannon Hill’ . This seems to mean ‘hill belonging to the canons', because the canons of Merton Priory owned the land. Nevertheless it is noted as being a warlike reference on the Scorpio section on the Kingston Zodiac. . It was earlier part of a hillside in Merton ‘waste’.
Cannon Hill house was owned by a William Taylor in 1763 – it had a lots of park land around it As well as Cannon Hill Farm. It was then bought by Richard Thornton who was extremely rich and died in 1863. The Estate was then just used for shooting and the house was demolished in the 1920s. Subsequently the Council built estates on it and private developers builders laid out a posher area.
Open space on the hill – this is there now because Joseph Hood MP worked to save it and he with, public opposition succeeded in saving 60 acres, which the local council purchased in 1926 along with financial help,.. This is now a recreation ground plus a small nature reserve and playing fields. A London Wildlife Trust reserve is at the middle of the park, close to the pavilion
