Banstead Downs

Open, gorse-clad with an extensive view to the northwest, in the direction of Richmond Park and the Thames valley. These breezy downs, once noted for their sheep and praised by Pope, were a favourite venue for horse-racing before the Epsom course became popular; Charles II attended a meeting here soon after the Restoration.
