Kent Hatch Road

'Salt Box' which stands a short distance west of the Carpenter's Arms was rebuilt in the nineteenth century. There is another 'Salt Box' at Biggin Hill. This allied to the fact that they are both not too far from the course of the Roman Road, which runs from quite near Saltdean on the Sussex Coast, has led to the belief that a 'salt road' is  indicated. If this is true the salt would have been obtained by the evaporation of sea water. A further claim is that the narrow Greensand ridge on which the Salt Box stands would have been a conveniently dry spot for the former salt storehouse.
